Knit Trousers with Drawstring

Knit trousers with a drawstring waist, made for autumn and winter in a soft, warm, stretchy knit. The adjustable waistband makes the fit forgiving, and the elastic is anchored at the side seams so it cannot twist in the wash. The drawstring is matched to the fabric with heat-sealed ends or cord locks, and kept to a practical length. The knit stretches with the body and recovers, so the trousers do not bag at the knee or the seat, and the soft inside makes them comfortable for lounging, travel and long days at a desk. Colours are matched to Pantone; the sample is an earth palette of olive, khaki, grey and black. Sizes S–XXL. MOQ 100 pieces, sampling 7–10 working days, bulk 25–40 days.

Knit Trousers with Drawstring Waist

Wholesale and private label

Overview

These are knit trousers with a drawstring waist, made for autumn and winter and for the shoulder seasons when denim feels too heavy. The knit is soft, warm and stretchy, so the trousers move with the body and stay comfortable when sitting for a long time, and the drawstring waist is adjustable rather than fixed, which makes one size band fit a wider range of customers. The elastic waistband sits flat under a sweater or a T-shirt, and the drawstring can be adjusted quickly without a belt. The trousers are developed as a stock item and as a private-label piece: the knit, the colour, the waistband, the leg shape and the labels are all open to the buyer’s specification. Sizes run [S–XXL], and can be graded to your own size chart. MOQ is 100 pieces per colourway.

Why buyers choose this style

Knit trousers are one of the most comfortable items a customer can buy, and they sell across the whole autumn and winter season rather than in a single fashion window. They work as loungewear at home, as casual wear for errands and travel, and as a smart-casual piece with a knit top or a shirt, which means the same garment is bought by different customers for different reasons.

The drawstring waist is what makes the style easy to sell. A fixed waistband has to be tried on; a drawstring waist can be adjusted at home, so customers accept a slightly looser fit and the return rate falls. That combination of comfort and forgiveness is why knit trousers repeat so well, and it is the reason this style belongs in every autumn range.

For the buyer, the numbers are straightforward: 100-piece MOQ, 7–10 day sampling and 25–40 day bulk lead time, with mixed sizes in one order.

The drawstring waist and elastic band

The waistband is elasticated and closed with a drawstring, so the fit can be adjusted in seconds. The elastic is set inside the waistband channel rather than exposed, so it does not dig into the waist or show under a top, and it is stitched in place at the side seams so it cannot roll or twist inside the channel after washing. A twisted waistband is the most common complaint on drawstring trousers, and the fix is in the construction rather than in the price.

The drawstring itself is specified carefully. The cord is matched to the fabric in tone, it exits at the centre front, and the ends are finished with heat-sealed tips, small cord locks or a simple knot, depending on the look you want. The cord is kept to a practical length: long enough to adjust comfortably, short enough that it does not trail or catch. Where the market requires it, the drawstring can be fully enclosed or made with a stretch cord, which is the safer option for children’s wear and for loungewear.

The waistband depth and the elastic width are confirmed on the sample, because a deeper waistband feels more comfortable on a knit and holds its shape better, while a narrower band gives a slimmer look.

Knit fabric: comfort, stretch and warmth

The trousers are made in a knit fabric that stretches and recovers, so the garment fits the body without restricting movement, and it keeps its shape at the knee and the seat instead of bagging out after a day of wear. The inside of the knit is soft against the skin, which makes the trousers comfortable for lounging, travel and long days at a desk.

The weight is chosen so the trousers can be worn indoors without overheating and layered outdoors without bulk. A heavier knit reads as a winter pair, while a lighter knit works as a three-season piece — and because the same pattern can be produced at both weights, a buyer can offer a light and a heavy version of the same style.

Two quality points are controlled before bulk. Pilling: knit trousers pill where they rub, such as at the inner thigh, the knee and the seat, so the yarn is selected and tested for pilling. Shrinkage and recovery: the fabric is pre-shrunk or washed, and the stretch recovery is tested so the knees and the waistband do not go slack after washing. Colour is dyed on the yarn, which gives an even shade and keeps repeat orders consistent.

Leg shape and hem

The leg can be produced in a straight shape for a classic, relaxed look, or tapered towards the ankle for a cleaner, sportier line. Both versions use the same waistband and the same knit, so the choice is a pattern decision rather than a material one.

The hem can be finished with a ribbed cuff, which holds the trouser in place and stops the hem dragging on the floor, or with a plain hem, which gives a more formal line and works better with shoes. The hem finish is confirmed on the sample, together with the leg opening and the total length, because these three measurements decide how the trouser sits on the foot.

Fit and sizing

The fit is developed to your own size chart. Waist relaxed, waist stretched, hip, thigh, leg opening, inseam and total length are measured flat, without stretching, and the measurements are printed in both centimetres and inches on the size guide. Because the waist is adjustable, the extended waist measurement should be shown next to the relaxed measurement, so the customer can see the full range of the size.

Reference sizes [S–XXL], confirmed on the order. Where the trousers are sold online, the size guide should also state that the knit stretches, and that the measurements are taken flat.

Colour and finishing

The photographed sample is an earth palette — olive, khaki, grey and black — which is the easiest colour group to sell in knitwear because it works with knit tops, denim and coats. Colour is matched to your Pantone reference and checked under D65 light before cutting, so the body and any contrast trims do not differ in shade under shop lighting.

The finishing is where knit trousers are judged: the waistband is pressed flat, the seams are overlocked or linked and pressed, loose ends are trimmed and secured, and the inside of the trouser is clean enough to wear against the skin.

Sampling and production timeline

  1. Inquiry. Send a photo, a sketch or a tech pack.
  2. Fabric. Confirm the knit, the weight and the colour, 3–7 days.
  3. Pattern. Fit, waistband, leg shape and hem, 2–3 days.
  4. Sample. First sample with the drawstring waist, 7–10 working days per round.
  5. Approval. Your sign-off on fit, colour, waist and hem.
  6. Bulk. Production, 25–40 days after approval and deposit.
  7. Shipment. Final inspection and packing, then sea, air or express.

Most knitwear styles are approved in two rounds: the first sample confirms the fit and the leg shape, and the second confirms the knit, the colour, the drawstring and the hem.

Quality control, stage by stage

  • Knit checked on arrival, including weight, shade and hand feel.
  • Waistband, hip, thigh and leg opening measured during sewing.
  • Drawstring pull test and elastic recovery test on every size.
  • Waistband checked for twisting after washing.
  • Pilling, shrinkage and colourfastness tested on the finished trousers.
  • Measurement, colour and label verification, then needle detection and final inspection.

Minimum order quantity

The MOQ is 100 pieces per colourway, and mixed sizes within one colour are accepted, so a 100-piece order can cover a full size run. Custom dyeing, a special knit or special cord ends may require a higher quantity, confirmed at quotation stage.
